Oven not heating in Burnsville: bake, broil or nothing
The preheat signal never sounds, the broiler works but bake does not, or a gas oven clicks and stays cold. Burnsville kitchens run both gas and electric ranges, and each one fails in its own particular ways.

Safe checks first
Safe checks before booking oven repair
- Confirm the oven is set to bake and not to delay start, timed cook, Sabbath mode or a control lock.
- After a self-clean, make sure the cycle has finished and the door lock has released before you try baking.
- Electric range: find the double breaker and switch it fully off, then on; a half-tripped breaker cuts the heat.
- Gas range: if the cooktop burners light normally, gas is reaching the range; do not touch the supply line or its shutoff.
- On an electric oven with an exposed lower element, look through the window for a blister, split or burn mark.
- Set an oven thermometer on the middle rack; if heat is only slightly off, the menu's temperature offset may help.

Likely causes
Common reasons an oven will not heat
| Likely cause | What points to it | What the technician tests |
|---|---|---|
| Burned-out bake element | Electric oven; broil works, bake stays cold, visible break | Element resistance, voltage at its terminals during a bake call |
| Weak gas bake igniter | Igniter glows orange but no flame, or flame after a long delay | Igniter amperage with a clamp meter against the safety valve's requirement |
| Oven temperature sensor | Sensor code, wild temperature swings, preheat never finishes | Sensor resistance at room temperature and warm, checked against the chart |
| Control relay or board | Display normal, no heat in any oven mode | Relay output voltage, board supply, stored error codes |
| Thermal fuse or door lock after self-clean | Stopped heating right after a self-clean cycle | Thermal fuse continuity, lock motor and switch, lock signal to the control |
How it works
How gas and electric ovens make and hold heat
An electric oven heats with a bake element on the floor, sometimes hidden beneath it, and a broil element at the top, plus a fan, and in true convection models a third element. The control reads a temperature sensor whose resistance rises as the oven warms and switches the elements through relays to hold your setting. A gas oven uses a burner under the floor. On most models a glow-bar igniter is wired in line with the oven safety valve, and that valve opens only when the igniter draws enough current to get very hot. So an igniter can glow bright orange and still be too weak to open the valve. Some newer gas ranges use spark ignition and an electronic valve instead.
Elements fail from age and thermal stress, and spills that bake onto an exposed coil create hot spots that blister and split it. Glow-bar igniters wear slowly: their resistance creeps up with use, the current they draw drops, and one day the valve stops opening even though the igniter still glows. Sensors fail from heat-damaged wiring about as often as from the sensor itself. Self-clean cycles push the oven far hotter than any recipe, which is why thermal fuses, door locks and control boards so often quit right after one. And sometimes the oven is fine and the supply is not: the technician tests the outlet and breaker, and a fault in the home's wiring goes to an electrician.

Burnsville kitchens, holiday baking and storm outages
Natural gas heats most homes in Dakota County, so gas ranges are common in the 1960s and 1970s ramblers and split-levels that fill so many Burnsville neighborhoods, alongside electric and induction ranges in condos and apartments. Holiday baking, and the self-clean run before a family gathering, put the heaviest loads on ovens just when the weather is coldest. Burnsville's hard water, about 23 to 25 grains per gallon, mostly spares ovens, though steam ovens and steam-assisted wall ovens with water reservoirs build scale and need descaling. Storm outages and surges, like the July 2025 storms, can leave an oven control locked or blank until power returns and the breaker is reset.
When to call
When it is time to book oven repair
Book a visit when the settings, locks and breaker all check out and the oven still will not heat, when a gas igniter glows without lighting, when you can see a split element, or when a sensor code keeps returning. A visit requested through the online form brings up to $15 off the eventual repair. You pay $89 to have the fault found; it is folded into the repair price if you approve and is the only charge if you do not.

Oven not heating: questions
Why does my gas oven igniter glow but the oven never lights?
Because glowing is not enough. The oven safety valve opens only when the igniter draws a certain current, and an aging igniter can glow orange while drawing too little. The result is a cold oven, or a flame that takes minutes to appear. Our technician measures igniter amperage with a clamp meter and compares it with what the valve requires before replacing anything.
My oven quit right after a self-clean cycle. Is that a coincidence?
Probably not. Self-clean runs far hotter than baking, and that heat is hard on the thermal fuse, the door lock and the control board. A door lock that will not release can block baking, and an open thermal fuse cuts heat entirely. The technician tests each one. Afterward, wiping spills by hand and running self-clean less often helps those parts last.
My oven heats, but cakes burn or come out underdone. Is the thermostat bad?
Check first with an oven thermometer on the middle rack after a full preheat. A small, steady difference can often be corrected with the temperature offset in the control menu. Large swings, slow preheats or a sensor code point to the temperature sensor or its wiring, which the technician checks by measuring resistance at room temperature and again warm.
Do you repair wall ovens, glass-top and induction ranges in Burnsville?
Yes. Our technicians handle gas and electric ranges in slide-in and standalone styles, single and double wall ovens, plus glass-top and induction cooktops from Whirlpool, GE, Frigidaire, KitchenAid, Café, Bosch, Thermador, Samsung, LG and others. Tell us the model number on the call or in the form, so the van carries the meter and the usual parts for that design.
Can I keep using the cooktop while the oven is out?
Usually, if the burners or elements work normally and there is no gas smell, burning smell or tripping breaker. Many oven faults, like a failed bake element or igniter, leave the cooktop untouched. If anything smells scorched or the control acts erratically, stop using the range. If there is any whiff of gas, get everyone outdoors before phoning the gas utility or 911.
