Dishwasher not draining in Eagan: standing water explained

Murky water sits in the bottom of the tub after the cycle ends, sometimes with a sour smell. In Eagan kitchens the cause is usually a filter, the disposal connection or the drain pump, and you can rule out a couple.

Safe checks first

Safe checks for standing water

  • Run the garbage disposal with the cold tap on for a few seconds; a packed disposal blocks the dishwasher's drain line.
  • Lift out the filter in the tub floor as the owner's manual shows and rinse it under the faucet.
  • Look under the sink for a kinked or crushed drain hose, without loosening or disconnecting anything.
  • If the sink has an air gap fitting near the faucet, watch whether water spits from it during draining.
  • Press cancel or use the drain function in the manual, then listen; a hum, a buzz or silence each helps us.
  • If the dishwasher is completely dead, look at the breaker and any GFCI outlet under the sink.

How it works

Where dishwasher water goes at the end of a cycle

Wash water collects in the sump, a small basin under the tub floor, and a filter keeps food from reaching the pumps. At the end of each wash and rinse, a drain pump pushes water up the drain hose, which loops high under the counter or passes through an air gap on the sink so dirty sink water cannot siphon back. From there it enters the garbage disposal or a fitting on the sink drain. A check valve or flapper at the pump outlet stops that water from sliding back into the tub. Many newer dishwashers rely on a filter you clean by hand rather than a built-in chopper, so that filter quietly decides how well the machine drains.

Food, grease and small hard objects cause most drain failures. Fruit pits, broken glass, bone fragments and paper labels from jars reach the sump and jam the pump impeller, which then hums and overheats. Grease that cools in the sump traps everything else, and mineral scale binds it into a crust. Filters that were never cleaned, often because owners do not know the dishwasher has one, slow every drain until water stands. The disposal is the other common blockage: a full disposal, a clogged air gap or a new disposal installed with its knockout plug still in place leaves the pump shoving against a wall. Check valves stick from the same debris.

Minnesota angle

Eagan well water, 1980s kitchens and outages

Eagan draws hard well water, and although its two city plants remove iron and manganese, the minerals that cause scale still reach your dishwasher. Scale mixes with grease in the sump and on the check valve, so drains slow over months instead of failing overnight. About a third of Eagan homes were built in the 1980s, and many original kitchens are on their second or third dishwasher, still tied to an older disposal. Townhomes and apartment buildings add shared drain lines that can back up into kitchens. Storms like those of July 2025, which cut power to about 300,000 customers across Minnesota and Wisconsin, can halt a dishwasher mid-cycle with water standing; restart it before assuming a fault.

When to call

When to stop and book a technician

Book a technician when water still stands after a cancel-and-drain with a clean filter and a clear disposal, when the pump hums without moving water, or when the same drain code returns. Request the visit through our online form and the repair price drops by up to $15. $89 pays for the diagnosis: approve the repair and it is counted inside that price; decline and that ends the bill.

Questions

Dishwasher not draining: questions

Is some water in the bottom of my dishwasher normal?

A small amount around the filter, enough to keep the seals moist, is normal on many models. Water covering the tub floor or reaching the lower spray arm after a finished cycle is not. Before you worry, make sure the cycle actually completed; a cycle interrupted by an opened door or a power blip leaves water behind until it runs to the end.

Why does my dishwasher drain into the sink?

The drain water is meeting a blockage and taking the easiest way out. A clogged air gap sends water out of the fitting beside the faucet, and a full disposal or slow sink drain pushes it up into the basin. A drain hose without a high loop can also let water move the wrong way. Our technician checks the hose route, air gap and disposal connection before testing the pump.

We just put in a new garbage disposal and now the dishwasher will not drain. Why?

New disposals ship with a plastic knockout plug sealing the dishwasher inlet, and it has to be removed when the hose is connected. If it was left in place, the dishwasher pump has nowhere to send water. Whoever installed the disposal is the right person to sort that out; if you are unsure, the technician can confirm it on a visit before testing anything else.

Can I pour drain cleaner into my dishwasher?

Please do not. Chemical drain openers can damage the pump seals, hoses and tub, and they leave caustic water sitting in the sump for whoever opens it next, including our technician. If water is standing, rinse the filter, run the disposal and try a drain cycle. If that fails, leave the water where it is and book a visit.

Does Eagan's hard water cause dishwasher drain problems?

It contributes. Minerals in Eagan's well water bind with grease into a crust that narrows the sump, coats the check valve and slows the pump. Using rinse aid, keeping a home softener supplied with salt and cleaning the filter regularly all help. When a drain slows anyway, the technician tests the pump, checks the valve and clears the path before naming a part.
