Dryers
Dryers in Burnsville, Savage and Prior Lake homes
Natural gas heats over 80 percent of homes in Dakota and Scott counties by older county figures, so a gas line usually reaches the laundry and gas dryers are common here, though electric models on their own heavy circuit are everywhere too. In a basement laundry the vent normally exits through the rim joist just above the foundation. That short run works well until the outside hood fills with lint or frosts shut during a stretch below zero. Laundry rooms on the second floor of newer subdivision houses push the duct much farther, to a side wall or the roof, and every extra elbow slows a load. Townhomes add shared walls and roof caps no one can see from the driveway.
Restricted airflow is behind more dryer failures than any single part. When hot air can’t leave, the high-limit thermostat cycles constantly and the thermal fuse eventually opens, so a new fuse alone just buys time. Picture an electric dryer in an Eagan townhome that runs a full timed cycle while the towels stay barely warm. The technician meters the heating element, which is intact, then the thermal fuse, which is open. Behind the machine the foil duct is crushed against the wall, and the roof cap is packed with lint. The fuse is replaced, the crushed section gives way to rigid metal pipe, and the owner gets a clear note that the cap on the roof needs cleaning, which sits outside the appliance.
Symptoms
Dryer symptoms and what sits behind them
Tumbles but no heat
On an electric dryer we meter the element, thermal fuse and thermostats and confirm both legs of the breaker are live, since one tripped leg keeps the drum turning without heat. On gas we watch the igniter, test the flame sensor and measure the gas valve coils, which weaken with age.
Heats, then turns cold mid-load
Gas valve coils that fail once they warm up are the classic cause, letting the burner light a few times and then quit. A cycling thermostat drifting out of range or a restricted vent tripping the high limit can look the same. We run the dryer long enough to catch it in the act.
Needs several cycles to dry
Check the lint screen first; dryer-sheet film can block it even when it looks clean. Beyond that, a crushed duct, a clogged or frosted hood, coated moisture-sensor bars or a washer that leaves loads soaking wet are the usual reasons. We check airflow at the hood and test the sensor circuit.
Squealing, thumping or scraping
A squeal at startup is nearly always the idler pulley; a rhythmic thump points to flat drum rollers; scraping means worn drum glides or a felt seal that has slipped. We take the front or top off, spin the drum by hand, inspect the belt and replace whatever has worn through.
Won’t start at all
A failed door switch, an open thermal fuse on models that cut the motor, a worn start switch or the motor itself can each leave a dryer silent. We test the outlet and cord first; if power is missing at the wall, the fault is in the house wiring, which is an electrician’s job.
Gas smell by the dryer
Don’t touch light switches or go looking for the leak. Get everyone out of the house and call the gas utility or 911 once you are outside. When the utility has cleared the line and the dryer is the remaining question, our technician can test its gas valve and burner assembly.
Brands and models
Dryer makes and models in local laundry rooms
Whirlpool, Maytag, Kenmore and Amana dryers, several of them close cousins, fill the basements of older ramblers and split-levels, and their belts, rollers, fuses and igniters are parts we keep on the van. LG and Samsung front-load pairs are common in newer houses, often with steam cycles and sensor drying. GE, Electrolux and Frigidaire round out the usual lineup, Speed Queen turns up with owners who prefer plain, durable controls, and compact Bosch and Miele units, including condensing and heat-pump models that need no outside vent, fit condos and stacked closets. Look for the model tag just inside the door opening.
By city
Dryer vents and water from Burnsville to Bloomington
Dryers rarely touch water, but steam models do, and their nozzles scale fastest in Burnsville at about 23–25 grains, in Apple Valley at about 24 and on Eagan’s hard well water. Savage (about 19–21 grains), Prior Lake (about 19.3) and Lakeville (about 18) see the same thing more slowly. Bloomington’s water, softened by the city to about 5 grains, spares the nozzle, though oversudsed washer loads can arrive wetter and run long. Rosemount owners on city well water should keep an eye on the softener. All eight cities share the winter side: about 51 inches of snow a year piles against low vent hoods, and cold snaps frost them over.
Repair or replace
Repair the dryer or retire it?
A dryer is one of the simplest machines in the house, which usually tilts the answer toward repair. Belts, rollers, idler pulleys, fuses, thermostats, elements, igniters and valve coils are all modest parts, and a sound drum and cabinet can outlast several of them. The cases that lean the other way are a drum or bulkhead rusted through, a motor and a control board failing together on an older machine, or a burner assembly damaged by years of poor venting. We give you the diagnosis, the written price and a plain view of the rest of the dryer, and we point out vent fixes that keep the next part from failing. A machine still under the maker’s warranty goes to that warranty first.
Questions
Dryer repair questions
Why are January loads so slow to dry?
Cold basement air and a frosted or snow-packed exterior hood are the usual culprits. After the January 2–5, 2023 storm dropped about 15 inches, plenty of hoods sat buried for days. Keep the hood clear and the flap moving. If loads still drag once airflow is restored, the problem is inside the dryer and worth a visit.
Are gas dryers tougher to fix than electric ones?
Not really; the parts are just different. Gas models rely on a glowing igniter, a flame sensor and the coils on the gas valve, while electric models heat with an element watched by a pair of thermostats, and both share belts, rollers, fuses and motors. Our technicians carry parts for both. Any gas smell means leaving the house first and calling from outside.
Will you check the dryer vent at my Lakeville house?
Yes, as part of the dryer visit. We look at the duct behind the machine, swap crushed foil for rigid metal pipe when needed and check how air leaves the exterior hood. Second-floor laundry rooms in newer Lakeville homes often have long runs, and when a section inside the wall needs cleaning, we tell you so.
My dryer trips the breaker in our Apple Valley rambler. Why?
A heating element shorted to the cabinet, a damaged cord or a failing motor can trip the breaker, and so can a tired breaker or a loose connection in the outlet. We test the element, cord and motor first. If the dryer checks out and the outlet or breaker is the problem, that part belongs to an electrician.
Are foil or plastic ducts acceptable behind a dryer?
Plastic should go, and thin foil crushes easily when the dryer is pushed back. Rigid or semi-rigid metal with as few bends as possible moves air better and holds less lint. A smoother duct also means fewer blown fuses and shorter loads, which is why we bring it up on almost every dryer call.
I need dryer repair near me in Rosemount. How does a visit work?
Call or use the online form, and someone from our office rings you to set a two-hour window. The technician puts a meter on the suspect parts, looks over the vent, names what failed and writes down one price. Once you say go, most fixes come straight off the van, the dryer runs a full heated cycle, and your invoice spells out the written warranty.
